This is the second year for the Soap Box Derby project at BASE. Students have worked afterschool with teachers Zach Balch, Susie Clarridge and Tom Brammel during BASE program hours to assemble soap box derby cars to compete in races. Students must work collaboratively, problem solve and use math and science skills to ensure their cars are safe yet fast. “It’s great to see students, teachers and parents all side-by-side, engaged and having a great time with this project. They’re having so much fun doing this that the kids may not even realize that they are using STEM skills and learning something from their experiences!” says BASE Director Nichelle Harris.
